Create placements

Overview

The creation of placements in the Equativ Monetization Platform is the process of mapping the ad slots where ads are served—on desktop/mobile websites, in iOS/Android apps, or in video players.

You can set up placements directly in the Equativ platform—as described in this document—or using the API, as described in Automate trafficking (API)

Placements consist of the following:

  • Sites: represent the publisher domain, mobile app, or supply partner.
  • Pages: represent the pages on the given site, for example homepage, article pages, or blog posts.
  • Formats: represent types of ad slots for creatives, for example top banner, or skyscraper.
  • Page groups: represent groups of formats. Note that formats are not assigned directly to pages. Instead, formats are enabled in page groups, which are then assigned to pages.

Additionally, you can use packs, to group sites or pages.

Create format

To create a format, proceed as follows:

  1. Go to Inventory > Formats.
  2. Click the orange + button.
  3. Enter the format’s name, for example name it based on its dimensions, for example 728 x 90 or Top banner 728 x 90
  4. Select the format type: Web or App (SDK). Once the format is saved, the format type cannot be changed. The Video option is disabled because the video formats—Video - Linear and Video - Non-linear—are available automatically, when the in-stream video workflow is enabled in your network.
  5. In case of a Web format, make the following settings:
    1. HTML Tags supported: always leave this option enabled.
    2. Instances per pageuse this option to get multiple instances of the same format on a page.
    3. Platform settings: define the format’s width and height. The size is not restrictive: it only represents the aspect ratio of the creative.
  6. In case of an App (SDK) format, make the following settings:
    1. Instances per pageuse this option to get multiple instances of the same format on a page
    2. Width and Height: define the format’s width and height.
  7. Click Save.

You can create a maximum of 500 formats in your network.

Create site

In most cases, create a site for each domain or app you intend to monetize. This practice ensures granularity so you can analyze and optimize each domain/app using the reporting, monitoring, and forecasting tools.

To create a Site, proceed as follows:

  1. Go to InventorySites & pages.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Fill in the following fields:
    1. Site Name: name appearing in the EMP user interface.
    2. Display Name: name appearing in EMP reporting.
    3. Site URL: if you are creating a website, add the website's URL. It must contain http(s)://www or http(s)://, and a dot (".") must follow the domain, for example: http://www.mysite.com. The website URL added here is used as a fallback value Equativ will forward to demand partners if the website URL cannot be determined automatically from the ad request. Without knowing the website URL, buyers usually reject such ad opportunities as invalid. If the site you are creating represents multiple actual websites, it is recommended instead to send the site URL dynamically in ad requests, using the pgDomain parameter. For more information about this parameter, see GET Ad API integration.
    4. Application Id: if you are creating a mobile app, add the application Id—also known as bundle Id—extracted from the app store URL, for example, the application Id 294047845, extracted from the iOS app store URL https://itunes.apple.com/app/id294047845 or com.lemonde.androidapp, extracted from the Android app store URL https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lemonde.androidapp&hl=en. The iOS application Id is a numeric Id while the Android application Id is alphanumeric with at least two segments separated by dots, each segment starting with a letter. The application Id added here is used as a fallback value Equativ will forward to demand partners if the application Id cannot be determined automatically from the ad request. Without knowing the application Id, buyers usually reject such ad opportunities as invalid. If the application you are creating represents multiple actual applications, it is recommended instead to send the application Id dynamically in ad requests, using the buid (see GET Ad API integration) or bundleId (see POST Ad API integration: parameter reference) parameters.

Set Ad network business model

With this option, ad networks and agencies can define the buying price of the publisher's inventory:

  • Publisher CPM: the publisher earns the specified value for every 1000 impressions. The default value is 0, meaning that the publisher earns nothing.
  • Ad network rate (%): the ad network retains the defined percentage of the revenue. Defining 70% means that the Ad network retains 70% of the revenue and pays out 30% to the publisher. The ad network rate can also be used in prebid.js integrations. For more information, see “Create websites” in Set up and manage client-side header bidding.

Once a business model has been defined, it cannot be changed!

Child-directed site

For information about the Child-directed site field, see section "Declaring a website as child-directed" in the Comply with Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) article

Assign IAB categories

You can assign IAB categories that best fit your site. These categories are sent in bid requests to Equativ's demand partners, improving your monetization. To set IAB categories, expand the IAB categories associated with this site tab, and click Edit categories.

Create page group

To create a page group, proceed as follows:

  1. Click New Page group
  2. Name the page group according to the formats it contains, for example 300x250, medium rectangle, or MedRec.
  3. Click Save.
  4. Click the green/blue button located to the right of the page group name.
  5. Select the formats to be part of this page group.

You can assign one page group to multiple pages, but each page is assigned to a single page group. A page group can be used for a single website only.

If applicable, use the Copy Website option.

Create page

Follow these steps, to create a page:

  1. Select the site to which you would like to add your page
  2. Click New page.
  3. Select the appropriate Page group from the drop-down list.
  4. Optionally,  use the Parent page option to create a tree structure, nesting child pages under parent pages. You can organize the parent/child pages under a site on a maximum of 6 levels: the entire structure can have a maximum of 7 levels, including the site. Use short page names in case of page trees with many levels since a page name can contain a maximum of 100 characters. Any page name—as contained in the ad tag—is prefixed by all of its parent page names, separated by slashes, for example: myParentPage/myChildPage/myGrandchildPage.
  5. Enter the Page name.
  6. Enter the Page URL (recommend).
  7. Keep the Allow ad delivery on this page enabled to ensure ads are displayed on the page.
  8. Click Save.
  9. Add IAB categories that best fit your page. These categories are sent in bid requests to Equativ's demand partners to improve monetization.

Any ad call carries the page ID. This ID is assigned by Equativ when a page is created. You can use the page name instead of the page ID, if you want to continue to use the names used in your previous or external ad management system. Reach out to your Equativ contact to have the page name feature enabled.

Get ad tags

You can use a CNAME to have an advertising subdomain on your own domain, for example ads.mydomain.com, while still pointing to Equativ's servers. In this case, make sure that your advertising subdomain does not get access to your first party cookies. The advertising subdomain—for example ads.mydomain.commust not get access to any authentication token stored on your main domain, for example mydomain.com.

After you create your pages, you can download their ad tags, provided as TXT export files. Each ad tag contains a site ID, page ID, format ID, and optionally some targeting information. For some ad tag types, you will find a generic code at the beginning of the file, followed by all the ad tags, provided by website, page, and format. For more information, see Tagging guide: get started.

To download ad tags, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Inventory > Sites & Pages
  2. Expand the selected Site by clicking on the + icon next to the selected site.
  3. Select the page.
  4. In the Tags section, choose the tag type from the drop down menu and expand the generated ad tag for that format. Available ad tag types:
    1. OneCall: used to call all formats on a page in a single call ("OneCall"). Recommended ad tag for integrations of Equativ ad tags on websites.
    2. Standard: used to call each format of a page one by one, as opposed to OneCall.
    3. Standalone: used to make a third party system, for example a publisher ad server, call ads from Equativ. In the third party system, the Standalone tag is used as a redirect tag. Usage in an HTML page recommended only if none of the other tag types can be used.
    4. NonRich: used to retrieve ads in environments where javascript cannot be used.

For more information about the specifics of each of the ad tags, see Tagging guide: get started.

To download all your tags at once—for example, the ad tags from all pages of the site—select a site under the Sites & Pages view, and click Download all tags.
